About the Library
Course Reserves

What exactly are Reserves?

Reserves are a special collection kept at the Circulation Desk in each of the libraries. The Course Reserves collection includes items placed in the library by instructors for students to use for specific courses, such as textbooks, supplemental texts, sample exams or videos. Desk Reserves are items which the librarians have identified as being in high demand, very valuable, or difficult to replace if lost.

Checking Out Reserve Items

Reserve books are arranged by Course; photocopies are arranged by Instructor's Last Name. Be sure to provide the correct information when making your request.

Loan Periods

The course instructor determines the period of time for Reserve checkout (generally 1-2 hours). Because Reserve items are in high demand for a whole class, it is important that they be returned on time.

Fines

Reserves Fines by Checkout Period

  • Hourly - In Library Use: $2 per hour, $50 maximum
  • Hourly - Out of Library: $2 per hour, $50 maximum
  • Daily / Weekly: $5 per day, $50 maximum

This policy seeks to make reserve textbooks more accessible to students by discouraging the practice of "renting" books for prolonged periods. The maximum fines have been increased to make retaining items beyond the due date an unattractive strategy for avoiding purchasing textbooks. The policy protects students who observe the reserve due dates.

Wherever possible, the library will allow reserve books to be taken outside the library for copying in order to allow them to make more affordable copies.

Borrowers are responsible for returning library materials before the time and date marked on the date due slip. As a courtesy, the library will attempt to contact borrowers when materials are overdue.

Replacement Charges

The Library will replace any item that is more than 10 days overdue. The Library will bill the borrower for the full replacement cost plus $5.00 for processing.

When a borrower has charges (fines or replacement charges) on his or her record, library privileges and academic records will be frozen. Borrowers should contact the Library Circulation Supervisor immediately to arrange to pay fees and reinstate library privileges and access to academic records.

If a reserve item is lost, the borrower is responsible for full replacement cost of the item plus $5.00 for processing.

The Library will use replacement fees to replace lost reserve items.
