Bachelor's Degree in Applied Behavioral Science - Frequently Asked Questions
- WHAT IS THIS DEGREE?
The Bachelor of Applied Behavioral Science is a new four year baccalaureate degree at SCCC for students wishing to develop strong social and human services practitioner skills in a wide variety of roles, including mental health, chemical dependency, domestic violence, case management, work with homelessness, school based services, and many other specializations. It was developed to meet multiple employment needs in the community, as well as to create an academic pathway for professional/technical students who have limited baccalaureate options.
- WHAT ARE THE PRE-REQUISITES FOR THE DEGREE?
Applicants for admission to the degree program must hold an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) two-year degree in social and human services, or related degrees such as chemical dependency or interpreter training. These degrees are offered at SCCC, Highline CC, Edmonds CC, and Lake Washington Technical College. Successful applicants will have also demonstrated fitness for practice in the field through supervised work experiences, and a strong academic record. It is expected that students admitted to this degree will currently be working in their area of interest.
- WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS DEGREE?
Graduates will acquire 60 general education credits as a foundation for practice, and 120 credits in their areas of specialization, including multiple options for certificates. Two years of supervised field practice will be completed in the community. All classes will be evening and weekend formats. Up to 120 lower division credits will be allowed, which will enable students to complete certificates in chemical dependency, human services management, prevention specialist, child and family studies, or other specializations.
- WHEN WILL IT START?
Upper division classes for the first students will begin fall quarter, 2009.
- WHERE WILL CLASSES BE HELD?
All classes will be held at Seattle Central on the 3rd floor of Broadway-Edison.
- WHO WILL TEACH THE CLASSES?
All classes will be taught by present full or part-time faculty, or new SCCC hires.
- WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS?
Application packets will be available in January. Students will submit completed applications by March 1, 2009. Selections will be made by March 31st. Financial aid applications need to be completed by April 30.
